Treasure Island (1990)

(more) »rank: 3678

starring: Charlton Heston, Christian Bale, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, Richard Johnson
directed by: Fraser Clarke Heston

Editorial Product Review: :A tale about a fatherless boy finding dramatically different father figures throughout a remarkable adventure, Treasure Island is an entertaining coming-of-age story, with themes of family, loyalty, friendship, trust, and honesty at its core. While Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure tale is popular film fare, it's never been done this well. Charlton Heston stars as Long John Silver and Christian Bale as plucky Jim Hawkins in this TNT production. Directed by Heston's son Fraser (who also directed the excellent family fare Alaska), the film remains ...

Newsies

(more) »rank: 5916

starring: Christian Bale, David Moscow, Luke Edwards, Gabriel Damon, Max Casella
directed by: Kenny Ortega

Editorial Product Review: :Except for feature-length animation, the musical has gone the way of the dinosaur. The Walt Disney company took a stab at reviving the live-action musical in 1992 with Newsies, a throwback picture with a curious subject. In 1899, the pint-sized newsboys delivering the New York papers go on strike against the unfair practices of news magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The production is heavy on kiddie humor, although Christian Bale (the child star of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun) is charismatic as one ...

Portrait of a Lady

(more) »rank: 735

starring: Nicole Kidman, John Malkovich, Barbara Hershey, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Donovan (II)
directed by: Jane Campion

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Leave it to New Zealand director Jane Campion (The Piano, Angel at My Table) to begin an adaptation of Henry James's great novel (set in the late 1800s) with a group of late-20th-century women from Down Under talking about the importance of a kiss. Like any good film adaptation (and it's a very good one, indeed), this exquisitely framed and mounted Portrait of a Lady is at least as much Campion as it is James. The story of strong-willed, independent-minded Isabel Archer (Nicole ...

Little Women (Slip)

(more) »rank: 8752

starring: Winona Ryder, Gabriel Byrne, Trini Alvarado, Samantha Mathis, Kirsten Dunst
directed by: Gillian Armstrong

Editorial Product Review: essential video:The flaws are easily forgiven in this beautiful version of Louisa May Alcott's novel. A stirring look at life in New England during the Civil War, Little Women is a triumph for all involved. We follow one family as they split into the world, ending up with the most independent, the outspoken Jo (Winona Ryder). This time around, the dramatics and conclusions fall into place a little too well, instead of finding life's little accidents along the way. Everyone now looks a bit ...

Editorial Product Review:Description:Disney's most beautifully animated masterpiece boldly brings to life a fun-filled adventure of hope, courage, and friendship. True to the spirit of every Disney classic, POCAHONTAS became the #1 family film of the year -- bursting with 'all the colors of the wind'! Empire of the Sun

(more) »rank: 2976

starring: Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, Nigel Havers, Joe Pantoliano
directed by: Steven Spielberg

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an afternoon? What if you were only 12? Bale's transformation, from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned, desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning. Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography, and music (the ...

Equilibrium (2002)

(more) »rank: 14338

starring: Christian Bale, David Barrash, Sean Bean, Francesco Cabras, Maria Pia Calzone

Editorial Product Review: :A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, Equilibrium takes a respectable stab at a Fahrenheit 451-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression: If no one feels anything, no one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbors. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, Metropolis-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts 'sense offenders' and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics ...

American Psycho (Unrated Edition)

(more) »rank: 5043

starring: Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Bill Sage, Chloë Sevigny
directed by: Mary Harron

Editorial Product Review: essential video:The Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho, a dark, violent satire of the 'me' culture of Ronald Reagan's 1980s, is certainly one of the most controversial books of the '90s, and that notoriety fueled its bestseller status. This smart, savvy adaptation by Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) may be able to ride the crest of the notoriety; prior to the film's release, Harron fought a ratings battle (ironically, for depictions of sex rather than violence), but at the time the director stated, ...

Usually we're fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but its highest-end G9 Laser Mouse is expensive, overly complex, and lacks the ergonomic thought we've come to expect. If you like to brag about dot-per-inch limits, perhaps the G9's 3,200dpi laser will be enough to sell you, but for the price, we expect the design to match.

While compact and convenient, Panasonic's SD-based SDR-S150 camcorder doesn't make the quality cut.
