Americanization of Emily (Col)

(more) »rank: 5145

starring: James Garner, Julie Andrews, Melvyn Douglas, James Coburn, Joyce Grenfell
directed by: Arthur Hiller

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky (Marty) sinks his satirical fangs into this story of an American naval officer (James Garner) selected to be the first victim at the invasion of Normandy. Julie Andrews plays a prim, British war widow who falls for him. Cynical in tone, the story becomes an interesting collision of manipulative interests and renewed life, the same formula that worked so well in Chayefsky's scripts for Network and Hospital. --Tom Keogh

Smokey & The Bandit

(more) »rank: 850

starring: Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jerry Reed, Mike Henry, Paul Williams (III)
directed by: Hal Needham

Editorial Product Review: :It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has ...

Dick Tracy

(more) »rank: 9723

starring: Marvelee Cariaga, Seymour Cassel, Charles Durning, Stig Eldred, Charles Fleischer

Editorial Product Review: essential video:A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice, and Madonna simply smolders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much ...

Cannonball Run

(more) »rank: 8693

starring: Adrienne Barbeau, Terry Bradshaw, Jackie Chan, Bert Convy, Sammy Davis Jr.

Editorial Product Review: :Like The Gumball Rally (1976) before it, former stuntman Hal Needham's The Cannonball Run was inspired by the same real-life cross-country road race. If The Gumball Rally was the critical favorite, The Cannonball Run was the box-office favorite (spawning the almost-as-successful sequel, Cannonball Run II, a few years later). Aside from top-billed stars Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise (stars of Needham's Smokey and the Bandit series) plus Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. (as horny priests), the movie features many ...

Kelly's Heroes

(more) »rank: 6386

starring: Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland
directed by: Brian G. Hutton

Editorial Product Review: :This tongue-in-cheek 1970 variation on The Dirty Dozen looks less fresh than it did in the year of its release, but it still has some enjoyable moments. Clint Eastwood stars along with Donald Sutherland, Harry Dean Stanton, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, and Gavin MacLeod in the story of American soldiers who try to steal gold behind enemy lines in World War II. Sutherland's hippie G.I. doesn't have the sardonic and timely appeal he did during the Vietnam War, ...

Three Ninjas

(more) »rank: 6413

starring: Victor Wong (III), Michael Treanor, Max Elliott Slade, Chad Power, Rand Kingsley
directed by: Jon Turteltaub

Editorial Product Review: :A slightly better movie than you might think, this variation on The Karate Kid finds three youngsters helping out their grandfather in his fight against evil ninja warriors. The real secret weapon here is director Jon Turtletaub, paying some dues on this 1992 family feature; he's since gone on to direct John Travolta in Phenomenon and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping. --Tom Keogh Description:Here's the exciting action-adventure hit that sparked ninja-mania with audiences everywhere! After an organized crime ...

Cosmetics Reviews

Usually we're fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but its highest-end G9 Laser Mouse is expensive, overly complex, and lacks the ergonomic thought we've come to expect. If you like to brag about dot-per-inch limits, perhaps the G9's 3,200dpi laser will be enough to sell you, but for the price, we expect the design to match.

While compact and convenient, Panasonic's SD-based SDR-S150 camcorder doesn't make the quality cut.
