The Lion King (A Walt Disney Masterpiece)

(more) »rank: 13

starring: Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Moira Kelly
directed by: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the 'circle of life' with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters ...

Aladdin (A Walt Disney Classic)

(more) »rank: 78

starring: Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Frank Welker
directed by: Ron Clements, John Musker

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Disney's 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in ...

Peter Pan (Fully Restored 45th Anniversary Limited Edition) (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection)

(more) »rank: 1160

starring: Bobby Driscoll, Kathryn Beaumont, Hans Conried, Bill Thompson, Heather Angel
directed by: Hamilton Luske, Wilfred Jackson, Clyde Geronimi

Editorial Product Review: :Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie's story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: kids who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen ...

Treasure Island (1990)

(more) »rank: 523

starring: Charlton Heston, Christian Bale, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, Richard Johnson
directed by: Fraser Clarke Heston

Editorial Product Review: :A tale about a fatherless boy finding dramatically different father figures throughout a remarkable adventure, Treasure Island is an entertaining coming-of-age story, with themes of family, loyalty, friendship, trust, and honesty at its core. While Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure tale is popular film fare, it's never been done this well. Charlton Heston stars as Long John Silver and Christian Bale as plucky Jim Hawkins in this TNT production. Directed by Heston's son Fraser (who also directed the excellent family fare Alaska), the film remains ...

The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition)

(more) »rank: 1254

starring: Phil Harris, Sebastian Cabot, Louis Prima, George Sanders, Sterling Holloway
directed by: Wolfgang Reitherman

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include 'The Bare Necessities' and 'Trust in Me.' --Tom ...

Editorial Product Review:Description:Screen favorite Patrick Swayze (GHOST, DIRTY DANCING, POINT BREAK) stars in the fun-filled, action-packed hit TALL TALE: THE UNBELIEVABLE ADVENTURE. There's rousing, rollicking adventure as the dynamic Pecos Bill (Swayze) teams with larger-than-life heroes Paul Bunyan and John Henry to help a brave young man in the fight against a greedy land-grabber (Scott Glenn -- BACKDRAFT, HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER) who'll stop at nothing to get his hands on the deed to the youngster's family farm. Pete's Dragon

(more) »rank: 158

starring: Helen Reddy, Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters
directed by: Don Chaffey

Editorial Product Review: :Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. Not for anybody over the age of ten. --Tom Keogh

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
