The Lion King (A Walt Disney Masterpiece)

(more) »rank: 2

starring: Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Moira Kelly
directed by: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the 'circle of life' with some new friends and eventually comes ...

Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic)

(more) »rank: 8

starring: David Ogden Stiers, Jerry Orbach, Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White
directed by: Kirk Wise, Gary Trousdale

Editorial Product Review: essential video:The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes ...

Schoolhouse Rock! - Multiplication Rock

(more) »rank: 5

starring: Bob Dorough, Blossom Dearie, Christine Langner, Sue Manchester, Mary Sue Berry
directed by: Tom Warburton

Editorial Product Review: :From 1973 to 1985, a generation of kids watching Saturday morning television learned the function of conjunctions and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution with the help of an animated series called Schoolhouse Rock! The brainchild of executives at McCaffrey and McCall Advertising, the three-minute segments combined whimsical cartoons with catchy music (rock was only one of the styles) to help kids learn seemingly dry topics as easily as they could learn popular songs. Multiplication Rock tackles the ...

Schoolhouse Rock! - Grammar Rock

(more) »rank: 6

starring: Bob Dorough, Blossom Dearie, Christine Langner, Sue Manchester, Mary Sue Berry
directed by: Tom Warburton

Editorial Product Review: :There are two types of Schoolhouse Rock fans. Type A: those who--inspired in the '70s and '80s by 'Conjunction Junction' and 'Interjections!'--went on to become grammar gurus, copyeditors, and computational linguists. And type B: those who--less inspired by grammar than by catchy refrains--can still sing lines that today sound less than P.C.: Though Geraldine played hard to get (uh huh), Geraldo knew he'd woo her yet. He showed his affection, Despite her objection, And Geraldine hollered some interjections! ...

The Little Mermaid II - Return to the Sea

directed by: Brian Smith (XV), Jim Kammerud

Editorial Product Review: :Ariel and her husband, Prince Eric, have a little problem with their daughter, Melody, in the sequel to Disney's landmark The Little Mermaid. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say 'Briar Rose,' Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with ...

Lady and the Tramp

(more) »rank: 28

starring: Peggy Lee, Barbara Luddy, Larry Roberts (II), Bill Thompson, Bill Baucom
directed by: Wilfred Jackson, Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske

Editorial Product Review: :Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done ...

Aladdin (A Walt Disney Classic)

(more) »rank: 33

starring: Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Frank Welker
directed by: Ron Clements, John Musker

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Disney's 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda ...

Monsters, Inc.

(more) »rank: 37

starring: Jack Angel, Bob Bergen, Samuel Lord Black, Rodger Bumpass, Steve Buscemi
directed by: Peter Docter, David Silverman, Lee Unkrich

Editorial Product Review: : :The folks at Pixar can do no wrong with Monsters, Inc., the studio's fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. 'Sulley' Sullivan (wonderfully voiced by John Goodman) is a scare-monster extraordinaire in the hidden world of Monstropolis, where the scaring of kids is an imperative in order to keep the entire city running. Beyond the competition to be the best ...

Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection)

(more) »rank: 75

starring: Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn, Richard Haydn, Sterling Holloway, Jerry Colonna
directed by: Wilfred Jackson, Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske

Editorial Product Review: :Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, etc. Characterization is very strong, and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging ...

Sleeping Beauty (Fully Restored Limited Edition) (Walt Disney's Masterpiece)

(more) »rank: 16

starring: Mary Costa, Bill Shirley, Eleanor Audley, Verna Felton, Barbara Luddy
directed by: Clyde Geronimi

Editorial Product Review: :Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost ...

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
