Pure Luck

(more) »rank: 184

starring: Martin Short, Danny Glover, Sheila Kelley, Sam Wanamaker, Scott Wilson
directed by: Nadia Tass

Editorial Product Review: :This weak, 1991 remake of the French comedy La Chèvre stars Danny Glover as a detective who is sent to Mexico to find a businessman's daughter (Sheila Kelley) and who gets stuck with a hapless assistant (Martin Short). The film wears out its welcome very quickly, despite some passable physical comedy from Short. Both actors have made much better movies; don't be surprised if you can't make it through to the end of this one. --Tom Keogh

The Prince of Egypt

(more) »rank: 2320

starring: Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum
directed by: Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner, Simon Wells

Editorial Product Review: :Nearly every biblical film is ambitious, creating pictures to go with some of the most famous and sacred stories in the Western world. DreamWorks' first animated film was the vision of executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg after his ugly split from Disney, where he had been acknowledged as a key architect in that studio's rebirth (The Little Mermaid, etc.). His first film for the company he helped create was a huge, challenging project without a single toy or merchandising tie-in, the backbone du jour of ...

We're Back: Dinosaur's Story (Slip)

(more) »rank: 2151

starring: John Goodman, Blaze Berdahl, Rhea Perlman, Jay Leno, René Le Vant
directed by: Simon Wells, Dick Zondag, Phil Nibbelink, Ralph Zondag

Editorial Product Review: :Four dinosaurs take up a time-traveling scientist (Walter Cronkite) on his offer to get smart by eating 'brain grain,' and it's off to the 20th century in this animated kids movie. But there's no real terror in the streets here, as the newly cerebral, English-speaking prehistoric beasts hit the New York City pavement in search of a museum proprietor (Julia Childs). On the way they befriend a couple of kids from the opposite sides of the tracks, get rooked into performing in a demented ...

Father of the Bride (1991)

(more) »rank: 780

starring: Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams, Kieran Culkin, George Newbern
directed by: Charles Shyer

Editorial Product Review: :This '90s update of the Spencer Tracy-Elizabeth Taylor hit is a mix of the pleasant and the silly, a nice enough movie but a little too controlled to become particularly interesting. Steve Martin plays the aging patriarch who is threatened by his daughter's engagement and not-quite-willing to let her go. The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad ...

Merlin

(more) »rank: 7280

starring: Sam Neill, Miranda Richardson, Helena Bonham Carter, John Gielgud, Martin Short
directed by: Steve Barron

Editorial Product Review: essential video:What kind of guy was the wizard Merlin, anyway? He lives a long time, raises a boy to be a king, props up a Utopian empire with his magic and wisdom, and then watches as it all crumbles under such banal forces as vengeance and betrayal. This four-hour miniseries re-tells the story of Camelot and King Arthur from the perspective of the magic man who sacrifices a great deal to guide mortals toward a better destiny. Sam Neill plays Merlin as an ...

Father of the Bride Part II

(more) »rank: 341

starring: Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Martin Short, Kimberly Williams, George Newbern
directed by: Charles Shyer

Editorial Product Review: :Everybody important from the first film, including the writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, regroups for this sequel involving a pair of pregnancies. Steve Martin's patriarch has a crisis when his married daughter (Kimberly Williams) is with child, and an even bigger one when his middle-aged wife (Diane Keaton) announces that another bambino is on the way. Martin Short is more effectively used this time around (he played the wedding coordinator in the first film), and while this movie's inevitable climax has ...

Mars Attacks!

(more) »rank: 7897

starring: Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito
directed by: Tim Burton

Editorial Product Review: essential video:It's enlightening to view Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burton's eye-popping, schlock tribute to 1950s UFO movies actually plays better on video than it did in theaters. The idea of invading aliens ray gunning the big-name movie stars in the cast is a cleverly subversive one, and the bulb-headed, funny-sounding animated Martians are pretty nifty, but it all seemed ...

Three Amigos

(more) »rank: 7388

starring: Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Patrice Martinez, Philip Gordon
directed by: John Landis

Editorial Product Review: :Three Western stars (Martin Short, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase) from Hollywood silent films go to Mexico for what they assume will be a publicity appearance, and find they've actually been summoned to fight a local bandit. John Landis directed this 1986 comedy with self-conscious artifice, and it's hard to get into his self-congratulatory joke. Even the three main stars, brilliant comics all, can't sustain anything funny in it. --Tom Keogh

Shoes Reviews

The HP Compaq tc4400 convertible tablet offers decent performance and battery life, though we recommend adding more RAM.

Small and light enough for a shirt pocket, Samsung's Helix YX-M1 is a one-stop audio entertainment center with an XM radio, a digital music player, and room for 50 hours of tunes, but it comes up short on battery life.
