Annie Hall

(more) »rank: 61265

starring: Hy Anzell, Colleen Dewhurst, Shelley Duvall, Russell Horton, Carol Kane

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Annie Hall is one of the truest, most bittersweet romances on film. In it, Allen plays a thinly disguised version of himself: Alvy Singer, a successful--if neurotic--television comedian living in Manhattan. Annie (the wholesomely luminous Dianne Keaton) is a Midwestern transplant who dabbles in photography and sings in small clubs. When the two meet, the sparks are immediate--if repressed. Alone in her apartment for the first time, Alvy and Annie navigate a minefield of self-conscious 'is-this-person-someone-I'd-want-to-get-involved-with?' conversation. As they speak, subtitles flash ...

Shining

(more) »rank: 3741

starring: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson
directed by: Stanley Kubrick

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel than a complete reimagining of it from the inside out. In King's book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick's movie is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel's labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook mirror the emptiness in ...

Mother Goose Rock N Rhyme

(more) »rank: 846

starring: Harry Anderson, Cyndi Lauper, Brian Bonsall, Elayne Boosler, Bobby Brown
directed by: Jeff Stein

Editorial Product Review: :Mother Goose is missing from Rhymeland and it's up to Little Bo Peep and Mother Goose's son, Gordon, to find her. What is Rhymeland? It's the land of nursery rhymes created by Mother Goose. Problem is, if Mother Goose isn't around to keep the nursery rhymes alive, Rhymeland and its inhabitants will simply disappear. In this colorful, somewhat demented place, rock stars masquerade as Mother Goose characters and provide a whole new, if somewhat strange, perspective on classic rhymes. Little Bo Beep (Shelley Duvall) ...

Popeye (Clam)

(more) »rank: 10185

starring: Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall, Ray Walston, Paul Dooley, Paul L. Smith
directed by: Robert Altman

Editorial Product Review: :Nothing interests filmmaker Robert Altman more than a contained culture that mixes bare humanity with local eccentricity (think of his M*A*S*H and Nashville). So Altman's Popeye (1980), based on the old comic strip, works best as a portrait of a busy, cluttered, cartoonish town called Sweethaven. But it is much less successful as a comprehensible story about the famous sailor with massive forearms and a relationship with Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall). Robin Williams plays Popeye with his usual brilliance for mimicry, Paul Dooley makes ...

McCabe & Mrs. Miller

(more) »rank: 12144

starring: Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Rene Auberjonois, William Devane, John Schuck
directed by: Robert Altman

Editorial Product Review: essential video:Iconoclastic director Robert Altman (Nashville, M.A.S.H.), deconstructs and demythologizes Hollywood's typically romantic vision of the Old West in this haunting, breathtaking masterpiece. A stranger, McCabe (Warren Beatty's best performance), the film's nonheroic protagonist, rides into a dead northwest mountain town (to the mournful sounds of Leonard Cohen), possessing ambitious entrepreneurial dreams of expansion. As the town grows, Mrs. Miller (Julie Christie's finest role, as well), a tough madam, arrives and convinces McCabe to join her in a partnership. Neither are typical Western ...

American Tall Tales: Johnny Appleseed

(more) »rank: 14496

starring: Shelley Duvall

Editorial Product Review: :The story of Johnny Appleseed is a true homegrown American tale. It is said that when Johnny Chapman was born, a rainbow appeared that arched from his home to an apple tree. It seems destiny that Johnny grew up to become Johnny Appleseed. At 18, Johnny turned his back on going to college and set out to plant apple orchards across America. This version, presented by Shelley Duvall's American Tall Tales and Legends, is nothing short of delightful. Martin Short as Johnny Appleseed is ...

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
