Sister Act

(more) »rank: 47

starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Mary Wickes
directed by: Emile Ardolino

Editorial Product Review: :Whoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behavior, but the cute script turns the tables and shows how the latter energizes the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh Description:Relive all the fun, ...

Photographing Fairies

(more) »rank: 1026

starring: Toby Stephens, Emily Woof, Ben Kingsley, Frances Barber, Philip Davis
directed by: Nick Willing

Editorial Product Review: :The true story of two English children who claimed they photographed fairies in 1917 produced two different movies in the late 1990s. Not as well-known as the earnest family drama FairyTale: A True Story, the English-made Photographing Fairies takes a much more adult angle on the incident. The film follows not the children, but Charles Castle (Toby Stephens), a young photographer who loses his beloved wife on their honeymoon. A shell of a man through World War I, Castle ...

When a Man Loves a Woman

(more) »rank: 8317

starring: Andy Garcia, Meg Ryan, Ellen Burstyn, Tina Majorino, Mae Whitman
directed by: Luis Mandoki

Editorial Product Review: essential video:When a Man Loves a Woman is a dumb title (not another classic pop song, please) for a very smart movie. A kind of gender-switch take on The Lost Weekend, it's about a woman (Meg Ryan) whose alcoholism almost destroys her family. That may sound like just another TV movie, but When a Man Loves a Woman is so authentic in detail and emotion, that everything about it seems fresh, urgent, and engrossing. That's because the film ...

Braveheart

(more) »rank: 3245

starring: Alun Armstrong, Stephen Billington, Mhairi Calvey, James Cosmo, Brian Cox

Editorial Product Review: essential video:A stupendous historical saga, Braveheart won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for star Mel Gibson. He plays William Wallace, a 13th-century Scottish commoner who unites the various clans against a cruel English King, Edward the Longshanks (Patrick McGoohan). The scenes of hand-to-hand combat are brutally violent, but they never glorify the bloodshed. There is such enormous scope to this story that it works on a smaller, more personal scale as well, essaying love and ...

Remains of the Day

(more) »rank: 8668

starring: John Haycraft, Christopher Reeve, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Caroline Hunt
directed by: James Ivory

Editorial Product Review: essential video:This excellent film is probably best described as subtle elegance. Framed in the present, the movie deals with the lives inside an English country home just prior to World War II. Reunited with the filmmakers from Howards End are Emma Thompson as Miss Kenton, the head housekeeper, and Anthony Hopkins as Stevens, the impeccable butler. The bittersweet story centers on Stevens and his dedication to his master, Lord Darlington (a suitably officious and slyly pompous James Fox). ...

Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout

(more) »rank: 5860

starring: Jane Fonda

Editorial Product Review: :It was probably inevitable that Jane Fonda, who played such a defining role in the aerobics boom of the 1980s, would be on the yoga train as well when it started rolling in the 1990s. And on this tape (recorded in 1993), she does a good job of it. The focus is on the 'sun salutation,' a connected series of poses that builds strength, flexibility, and balance, and with repeated practice this offers what Fonda calls 'an excellent full-body ...

Usually we're fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but its highest-end G9 Laser Mouse is expensive, overly complex, and lacks the ergonomic thought we've come to expect. If you like to brag about dot-per-inch limits, perhaps the G9's 3,200dpi laser will be enough to sell you, but for the price, we expect the design to match.

Small and light enough for a shirt pocket, Samsung's Helix YX-M1 is a one-stop audio entertainment center with an XM radio, a digital music player, and room for 50 hours of tunes, but it comes up short on battery life.
